Introduction:
Hiper really made a name for themselves since redesigning the look of modular power supplies with their first modular Type-R models in 2005. Jon “Johnny English” Griggs was lucky enough to review some of their introductory models back then and now I’ve been fortunate enough to get a shot with one of their latest units – the HPU-4K530.
The early generations of the Type R PSU have proved winners in the aesthetics field and certainly fared decent in terms of their performance. Given that this unit is their lowest wattage modular unit (and little brother to their popular 580W model) – has Hiper brought anything new and improved to the table? Let’s find out!
If you haven’t read Johnny English’s first review of their non-modular flavors or don’t know much about cars, the "Type R" moniker was slapped on sport versions of Honda’s cars. It proved to be such a powerful marketing success that other motor manufacturers soon followed suit (to the point that every man and his dog that made anything started using “Type –R” to denote that their product was "souped-up").
Hiper describes it like this:
Type-R series - well known to any racing enthusiasts, Type R represents "Racing", by using original manufacturer's platform, and then enhanced to its maximum output
It’s a bold statement – I’m sure that if you’d label a product like that, you’d have to be certain that it performs like an exotic vehicle that costs an arm and a leg, not a Tractor…

Package
The box looked to have been on the receiving end of a little rough-housing in transit but was in better shape than I’ve seen some items arrive – thanks UPS!
When I opened the box I was surprised by the lack of packing material – just 2 layers of bubble-wrap were all that stood between the outside dangers of mass parcel transit and doom. Thankfully after getting it all out everything looked in tip-top shape.
Hiper Type-R power supplies all come shipped in their very own toolbox – not your average packaging to say the least! This has shelf appeal and the stickers all over it indicate all of the specs that you’d need to know including cable lengths (something that I’m always on the lookout for).
Opening the toolbox, you'll find bags and bags of cables all nicely wrapped, and removing the tray, you get to the manual, more nicely bagged up goodies and of course the PSU itself
